Reviewers accused it of being too similar to its predecessors in a time when the RTS genre was fielding impressive competition like Starcraft. But 1999 brought the series' first major setback-the long awaited sequel, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. By 1998 EA jumped to acquire Westwood, increasing its PC market share by 50% in the process. Command & Conquer: Sole Survivor, Westwood's brief, forgotten foray into single-unit multiplayer deathmatch, did little to dull the franchise's star. Many still consider this the best game in the series it was so popular it spawned a couple expansion packs of its own. The Soviets and the Allies had unique units that forced different tactics on each side, making for an interesting and long-lived multiplayer experience. Units and levels came in voluminous variety. Hammy and bombastic, Red Alert dared to ask big-picture questions like "What if Einstein built a time machine and used it to kill Hitler before World War II?" The ludicrous alt-Cold War yarn was told with some of the best tactical design of the era. 1996's Red Alert was so good it was decided to make it a full-fledged follow up. “Covert Operations was a ludicrously difficult map pack only for true obsessives. The+Second+Wave:+Expansions+and+Sequels Westwood knew it wanted to take its time developing the technology for the sequel, but it also knew the fans craved more C&C. From the start of the installer until the end of its resonant tale, Command & Conquer kept an army of gamers hooked.
It even introduced the charismatic Nod leader Kane, arguably the most iconic live-action character in the history of gaming. Dozens of units waged immense bloody battles during gameplay, while the story was told through the use of cutting-edge 90's full motion videos. The technology powering the experience was superb. Instead of having to tiptoe carefully through Frank Herbert's Dune canon, Westwood was free to tell a modern story, pitting the first-world nations of the GDI against the terrorist Brotherhood of Nod in a war over the valuable but toxic mineral Tiberium.Ĭommand+&+Conquer The action was faster and more tactically layered than any previous RTS.
